Rahu Ketu Shanti Puja

Rahu Abhishek Puja

Vedic Worship and Shanti Anushthan for Rahu and Ketu

In Sanatan Hindu tradition, Rahu and Ketu are regarded as the two shadow planets and hold an important place in Vedic astrology and religious practices. Their worship is traditionally included in several forms of Graha Shanti and spiritual Anushthan.

Rahu Ketu Shanti Puja is a dedicated Vedic ceremony in which both Rahu Dev and Ketu Dev are worshipped through Sankalp, Puja, Mantra Jaap, prayers, Havan and other prescribed rituals.

At Rahu Mandir Paithani, this Anushthan is performed by the Gurukul’s Acharyas, teachers and Brahmachari Batuks with devotion and under the guidance of experienced Acharyas.

The purpose of the Puja is to offer respectful worship to Rahu and Ketu and pray for peace, balance, wisdom, spiritual strength and divine grace for the devotee and their family.

The exact ritual sequence and Mantra count may vary according to the Sankalp and the guidance of the Acharyas. Different traditional practices also prescribe different Jaap counts and supporting rituals.

What Is Included in Rahu Ketu Shanti Puja?

Rahu Ketu Shanti Puja is conducted as a complete religious Anushthan rather than as a simple Mantra recitation.

Depending on the selected Anushthan, the ceremony may include:

  • Ganesh Puja
  • Sankalp
  • Kalash Sthapana
  • Devata invocation
  • Rahu Dev worship
  • Ketu Dev worship
  • Rahu and Ketu Mantra Jaap
  • Stotra and Vedic prayer recitation
  • Havan
  • Purnahuti
  • Aarti
  • Final Abhishek
  • Prasad

The final procedure is determined according to the Yajman’s Sankalp and the guidance of the Acharyas.

Step-by-Step Rahu Ketu Puja Procedure

1. Preparing the Puja Space

Before the ceremony begins, the designated area is cleaned and prepared for the Anushthan.

Arrangements are made for the Puja Vedi, Kalash, worship materials, Rahu-Ketu Puja, Mantra Jaap and Havan.

Since the ceremony can continue for several hours, sufficient space is also required for the Acharyas and Brahmachari Batuks participating in the Anushthan.

2. Ganesh Puja and Initial Prayers

The ceremony begins with the remembrance and worship of Lord Ganesha.

Prayers are offered for the removal of obstacles and for the smooth completion of the entire religious ceremony.

3. Sankalp

A formal Sankalp establishes the devotional purpose of the Puja.

The Yajman’s name, Gotra, date of birth and other relevant details may be included in the Sankalp.

The purpose for which the Rahu Ketu Shanti Puja is being performed may also be stated at this stage.

4. Kalash Sthapana and Devata Invocation

Where required by the selected ritual, Kalash Sthapana and invocation of the relevant deities are performed according to the prescribed tradition.

The main Rahu-Ketu worship then proceeds under the guidance of the Acharyas.

5. Rahu Dev Puja

Rahu Dev is worshipped according to the selected Vedic procedure.

Traditional Puja materials such as flowers, Akshat, Chandan, Dhoop, Deep, Naivedya and other prescribed offerings may be used.

The devotee’s Sankalp is kept in focus while prayers are offered for peace, stability, wisdom and spiritual well-being.

6. Ketu Dev Worship

The ceremony then includes the worship of Ketu Dev.

Relevant offerings, prayers and Mantras may be included according to the selected Anushthan.

Rahu and Ketu are worshipped together as part of the Shanti Anushthan, with prayers for harmony, spiritual balance and divine grace.

7. Rahu and Ketu Mantra Jaap

One of the principal components of the ceremony is Rahu Ketu Mantra Jaap.

The appropriate Mantras associated with Rahu and Ketu are recited by the Acharyas and Brahmachari Batuks according to the Sankalp.

The number of repetitions is not presented as a single compulsory count for every devotee. It may vary according to the nature of the Anushthan and the guidance of the Acharyas.

Traditional references commonly associate specific Beej Mantras and prescribed Jaap counts with Rahu and Ketu, but formal Puja practices can differ between traditions.

8. Rahu-Ketu Stotra and Vedic Prayers

Where applicable, relevant Stotras, Vedic prayers and additional Mantras may be recited.

These prayers form part of the devotional practice and are intended to express reverence towards the Divine while seeking peace and auspiciousness.

9. Rahu Ketu Havan

For an extended Rahu Ketu Shanti Anushthan, Havan may be performed as an important concluding ritual.

A sacred fire is established and prescribed offerings are made while the relevant Mantras are recited.

Traditional Rahu-Ketu Havan procedures may include specific offerings and Mantra recitation depending on the selected tradition.

10. Purnahuti

After the prescribed Havan has been completed, Purnahuti is offered.

This marks the completion of the main fire ritual.

Prayers are then offered for the well-being and auspiciousness of the Yajman and their family.

11. Aarti and Concluding Prayer

The principal religious activities are followed by Aarti and concluding prayers.

The devotee and their family are remembered in prayers for peace, spiritual strength, wisdom, stability and divine blessings.

12. Final Abhishek and Prasad

The final stage of the Anushthan is completed according to the selected Puja procedure.

The final Abhishek after completion of the Puja will be performed at Rahu Mandir Paithani itself.

After the concluding worship and prayer, Prasad is provided according to the arrangements made for the Yajman.

Who Performs Rahu Ketu Shanti Puja?

At Rahu Mandir Paithani, the Rahu Ketu Shanti Puja is performed by the Gurukul’s Acharyas, teachers and Brahmachari Batuks.

The Gurukul follows a traditional learning environment where Brahmachari students study Sanskrit, Vedic knowledge, Karmakanda, Mantra recitation and related religious practices.

The Puja and Mantra Jaap are conducted under the guidance of the Acharyas with sincerity, discipline and devotion.

The Yajman may participate in the Sankalp or other designated portions of the ceremony depending on the nature of the Anushthan.

How Does the Rahu Ketu Puja Begin?

Before the Puja is arranged, the necessary information of the Yajman is collected.

This may include:

  • Full Name
  • Gotra
  • Date of Birth
  • Relevant birth details
  • Contact information
  • Purpose of the Puja
  • Preferred date
  • Kundli, if available

After the required information and arrangements are confirmed, the Puja area is prepared.

The opening sequence may generally follow this order:

Puja Preparation → Ganesh Puja → Sankalp → Kalash Sthapana → Devata Invocation → Rahu Puja → Ketu Puja → Mantra Jaap

The remaining rituals are then completed according to the selected Anushthan.

How Is the Rahu Ketu Shanti Puja Concluded?

Once the prescribed worship and Mantra Jaap have been completed, the concluding rituals are performed.

The final sequence may include:

Rahu-Ketu Mantra Jaap → Stotra Recitation → Havan → Purnahuti → Final Abhishek → Aarti → Prayer → Prasad

The final Abhishek will be performed at Rahu Mandir Paithani.

The ceremony concludes with prayers for the Yajman and family, seeking peace, balance, wisdom, spiritual strength and divine grace.

Choosing the Right Place for Puja

To perform the puja according to Vedic rituals and traditions, enough space is required. Proper arrangements are needed for Ganesh Puja, Kalash Sthapana, the puja altar, and Bhadra. Adequate space is also necessary for the Batuk Brahmacharis and Acharyas who participate in the chanting of mantras and other religious rituals.

The main puja area at Rahu Temple does not have enough space for all these arrangements. Regular puja, darshan, and other religious activities also continue at the temple. Therefore, performing a detailed puja ceremony at the main temple area for several hours is not practical.

Puja at a Place Near the Temple

If the Yajman (devotee) wishes to perform the puja near Rahu Temple, they will need to arrange a suitable place on rent.

The rented place will have enough space for Ganesh Puja, Kalash Sthapana, Bhadra preparation, Sankalp, mantra chanting, and other required Vedic rituals.

The Yajman will be responsible for booking the place near the temple and paying the complete rental cost.

Puja at the Gurukul

Another and more convenient option is to perform the puja at the Gurukul. The Gurukul has sufficient space for detailed puja ceremonies, Sankalp, mantra chanting, religious recitations, and other Vedic rituals.

No separate space rental is charged for performing puja at the Gurukul. There is enough space for Batuk Brahmacharis and Acharyas to sit comfortably, arrange the puja materials, and perform the complete religious ceremony in an organized manner.

The Gurukul provides a peaceful, pure, and spiritual environment, making it suitable for long mantra chanting and detailed Vedic rituals. It offers a comfortable setting for devotees who wish to perform their Rahu Temple Puja in a calm and traditional atmosphere.

Final Abhishek and Religious Ritual After Puja

If the main part of the Puja and Vedic rituals is performed at the Gurukul, the final Abhishek (ritual bathing) will be performed at Rahu Mandir Paithani as the concluding part of the ceremony.

The detailed Puja and mantra chanting will be conducted in the peaceful and spacious environment of the Gurukul. The final stage of the Puja, including the Abhishek and other prescribed religious rituals, will then be completed by the Yajman at Rahu Mandir Paithani.

This arrangement provides a suitable and peaceful space for conducting detailed religious rituals at the Gurukul while ensuring that the final and important religious ceremony is respectfully completed at Rahu Mandir Paithani.

This traditional arrangement allows devotees to participate in the complete Puja process with proper religious procedures and devotion.

Bhandara and Food Donation After Puja

After completing the Puja, devotees who wish to offer Bhandara or food donation (Annadan) can contribute towards arranging meals for the Gurukul’s Batuk Brahmacharis and learned Acharyas.

Devotees can offer their service according to their faith and ability by:

  • Donating food ingredients and essential supplies to the Gurukul.
  • Sponsoring the cost of one meal for the Gurukul.
  • Offering Satvik food for the Batuk Brahmacharis.
  • Contributing grains, groceries, and other essential food items.

In the Sanatan tradition, Annadan and serving food to Brahmins are considered important forms of religious service and devotion. Offering food after a religious ceremony can be a meaningful expression of gratitude, devotion, and selfless service.

Providing food and donations with respect to Brahmins, Vedic scholars, and those engaged in Vedic studies holds a special place in Sanatan tradition. Food donation offered with sincere faith and devotion is regarded as a noble form of religious service.

Join the Service of Annadan

Devotees can participate in this sacred service according to their faith and capacity and contribute to the well-being of the Gurukul community.
