Traditional Mantra Sadhana and Vedic Worship of Rahu Dev
In the Vedic spiritual tradition, Mantra Jaap is regarded as an important form of devotional practice. Rahu Beej Mantra Jaap is a dedicated form of Rahu worship in which the prescribed Rahu mantra is recited with a specific Sankalp and devotional intention.
Devotees may undertake this Anushthan to worship Rahu Dev and offer prayers for peace, clarity, spiritual strength, stability and auspiciousness in life.
At Rahu Mandir Paithani, the Rahu Beej Mantra Jaap is performed by the Gurukul’s Acharyas, teachers and Brahmachari Batuks under traditional Vedic guidance.
The commonly recited Rahu Beej Mantra is:
ॐ भ्रां भ्रीं भ्रौं सः राहवे नमः॥
The mantra is traditionally associated with Rahu worship. The number of repetitions, duration and supporting rituals may vary according to the Sankalp and guidance of the Acharyas.
What Happens During Rahu Beej Mantra Jaap?
Rahu Beej Mantra Jaap is performed as a structured religious Anushthan. It is not limited to the repetition of a mantra. Depending on the selected ritual, the ceremony may include worship, Sankalp, Mantra Jaap, prayers, Havan and concluding rituals.
The exact procedure is determined according to the devotee’s Sankalp and the guidance of the Acharyas.
1. Preparation of the Sacred Space
The designated area is prepared before the ceremony begins.
Arrangements are made for the Puja Samagri, Kalash, seating, worship articles and other items required for the Anushthan.
Since an extended Mantra Jaap may continue for several hours, sufficient space is arranged for the Acharyas and Brahmachari Batuks participating in the ceremony.
2. Ganesh Puja
The Anushthan begins with the remembrance and worship of Lord Ganesha.
Prayers are offered for the ceremony to proceed without obstacles and for all prescribed religious activities to be completed properly.
3. Formal Sankalp
A formal Sankalp establishes the purpose of the Mantra Jaap.
The devotee’s name, Gotra, date of birth and other relevant details may be included in the Sankalp. The purpose for undertaking the Rahu Beej Mantra Jaap is also stated.
The prescribed Jaap is then undertaken according to the Sankalp.
4. Kalash Sthapana and Devata Invocation
Where required by the Anushthan, Kalash Sthapana and invocation of the relevant deities are performed according to the traditional procedure.
The main Rahu worship and Mantra Jaap then proceed under the guidance of the Acharyas.
5. Worship of Rahu Dev
Rahu Dev is worshipped with prescribed offerings, prayers and traditional rituals.
Devotees may pray for peace, wisdom, spiritual discipline, stability and divine grace while undertaking the Anushthan.
The detailed Puja procedure may differ according to the nature of the Sankalp.
6. Rahu Beej Mantra Recitation
The principal part of the ceremony is the recitation of the Rahu Beej Mantra:
ॐ भ्रां भ्रीं भ्रौं सः राहवे नमः॥
The prescribed number of repetitions is determined according to the selected Anushthan. There is no single fixed Jaap count applicable to every devotee.
The Mantra is recited with attention to pronunciation, continuity and devotional discipline.
7. Completion of the Prescribed Jaap
The required number of Mantra repetitions is completed according to the Sankalp.
For an extended Anushthan, the Jaap may be performed in multiple sessions or stages, depending on the total requirement.
8. Rahu Stotra and Additional Prayers
Where appropriate, Rahu-related Stotra, Vedic prayers or other traditional recitations may be included.
These additional prayers form part of the devotional atmosphere of the Anushthan and are performed according to the guidance of the Acharyas.
9. Havan
If Havan is included in the selected Anushthan, it is performed after the prescribed Mantra Jaap.
Offerings are made into the sacred fire while the relevant mantras are recited according to the traditional procedure.
10. Purnahuti
After completion of the prescribed Havan, Purnahuti is offered.
This marks the conclusion of the principal fire ritual and is followed by prayers for the devotee and their family.
11. Final Abhishek, Aarti and Prasad
The concluding religious procedures are completed according to the selected Anushthan.
The final Abhishek after completion of the Puja will be performed at Rahu Mandir Paithani itself.
The ceremony is then concluded with Aarti and prayers, followed by Prasad as arranged for the devotee.
Who Performs Rahu Beej Mantra Jaap?
At Rahu Mandir Paithani, the Rahu Beej Mantra Jaap is performed by the Gurukul’s Acharyas, teachers and Brahmachari Batuks.
The Brahmachari Batuks follow the traditional Gurukul system of learning, including Sanskrit, Vedic studies, Karmakanda, Mantra recitation and religious practices.
The Jaap and associated Puja rituals are conducted under the guidance of the Acharyas with sincerity, discipline and devotion.
Depending on the nature of the Anushthan, the Yajman may also participate in the Sankalp or other designated parts of the ceremony.
How Is the Rahu Mantra Anushthan Started?
Before the ceremony begins, the necessary details of the Yajman are collected.
These may include:
- Name of the devotee
- Gotra
- Date of Birth
- Relevant birth details
- Contact information
- Purpose of the Mantra Jaap
- Details required for the Sankalp
Once the information and Puja arrangements are finalized, the sacred space is prepared.
The ceremony generally progresses through a sequence such as:
Puja Preparation → Ganesh Puja → Sankalp → Kalash Sthapana → Devata Invocation → Rahu Dev Worship → Rahu Beej Mantra Jaap
The remaining rituals are performed according to the selected Anushthan.
How Does the Mantra Jaap Conclude?
After the prescribed number of Mantra repetitions has been completed, the concluding rituals are performed.
Depending on the Anushthan, the final sequence may include:
Completion of Jaap → Havan → Purnahuti → Final Abhishek → Aarti → Prayer → Prasad
The final Abhishek will be performed at Rahu Mandir Paithani.
The ceremony concludes with prayers for the devotee and their family, seeking peace, spiritual strength, wisdom, stability and divine blessings.
Choosing the Right Place for Puja
To perform the puja according to Vedic rituals and traditions, enough space is required. Proper arrangements are needed for Ganesh Puja, Kalash Sthapana, the puja altar, and Bhadra. Adequate space is also necessary for the Batuk Brahmacharis and Acharyas who participate in the chanting of mantras and other religious rituals.
The main puja area at Rahu Temple does not have enough space for all these arrangements. Regular puja, darshan, and other religious activities also continue at the temple. Therefore, performing a detailed puja ceremony at the main temple area for several hours is not practical.
Puja at a Place Near the Temple
If the Yajman (devotee) wishes to perform the puja near Rahu Temple, they will need to arrange a suitable place on rent.
The rented place will have enough space for Ganesh Puja, Kalash Sthapana, Bhadra preparation, Sankalp, mantra chanting, and other required Vedic rituals.
The Yajman will be responsible for booking the place near the temple and paying the complete rental cost.
Puja at the Gurukul
Another and more convenient option is to perform the puja at the Gurukul. The Gurukul has sufficient space for detailed puja ceremonies, Sankalp, mantra chanting, religious recitations, and other Vedic rituals.
No separate space rental is charged for performing puja at the Gurukul. There is enough space for Batuk Brahmacharis and Acharyas to sit comfortably, arrange the puja materials, and perform the complete religious ceremony in an organized manner.
The Gurukul provides a peaceful, pure, and spiritual environment, making it suitable for long mantra chanting and detailed Vedic rituals. It offers a comfortable setting for devotees who wish to perform their Rahu Temple Puja in a calm and traditional atmosphere.
Final Abhishek and Religious Ritual After Puja
If the main part of the Puja and Vedic rituals is performed at the Gurukul, the final Abhishek (ritual bathing) will be performed at Rahu Mandir Paithani as the concluding part of the ceremony.
The detailed Puja and mantra chanting will be conducted in the peaceful and spacious environment of the Gurukul. The final stage of the Puja, including the Abhishek and other prescribed religious rituals, will then be completed by the Yajman at Rahu Mandir Paithani.
This arrangement provides a suitable and peaceful space for conducting detailed religious rituals at the Gurukul while ensuring that the final and important religious ceremony is respectfully completed at Rahu Mandir Paithani.
This traditional arrangement allows devotees to participate in the complete Puja process with proper religious procedures and devotion.
Bhandara and Food Donation After Puja
After completing the Puja, devotees who wish to offer Bhandara or food donation (Annadan) can contribute towards arranging meals for the Gurukul’s Batuk Brahmacharis and learned Acharyas.
Devotees can offer their service according to their faith and ability by:
- Donating food ingredients and essential supplies to the Gurukul.
- Sponsoring the cost of one meal for the Gurukul.
- Offering Satvik food for the Batuk Brahmacharis.
- Contributing grains, groceries, and other essential food items.
In the Sanatan tradition, Annadan and serving food to Brahmins are considered important forms of religious service and devotion. Offering food after a religious ceremony can be a meaningful expression of gratitude, devotion, and selfless service.
Providing food and donations with respect to Brahmins, Vedic scholars, and those engaged in Vedic studies holds a special place in Sanatan tradition. Food donation offered with sincere faith and devotion is regarded as a noble form of religious service.
Join the Service of Annadan
Devotees can participate in this sacred service according to their faith and capacity and contribute to the well-being of the Gurukul community.
