Rahu Kaal Puja

Rahu Graha Shanti Havan

Traditional Vedic Worship During Rahu Kaal

In Hindu Vedic tradition, Rahu Kaal is recognized as a specific period of the day associated with Rahu. Its timing changes from day to day and depends on the local sunrise and sunset.

Devotees who wish to worship Rahu Dev during this period may perform Rahu Kaal Puja as a traditional form of prayer for peace, spiritual strength, stability and divine guidance.

At Rahu Mandir Paithani, Rahu Kaal Puja is performed as a structured Vedic Anushthan that may include Sankalp, Ganesh Puja, Rahu Dev worship, Mantra Jaap, Navagraha prayers, Havan and other prescribed rituals.

The ceremony is conducted by the Gurukul’s Acharyas, teachers and Brahmachari Batuks with devotion and discipline.

The purpose of this Puja is to offer sincere prayers to Rahu Dev and seek divine grace, inner stability, peace and auspiciousness.

Important: Rahu Kaal does not occur at the same clock time every day. The relevant timing depends on the location and the day’s sunrise and sunset. The Puja schedule will therefore be finalized according to the planned Anushthan and guidance of the Acharyas.

What Is Included in Rahu Kaal Puja?

Rahu Kaal Puja is an extended religious ceremony rather than a brief worship ritual. Depending on the Sankalp and the nature of the Anushthan, several traditional Vedic procedures may be performed.

The exact sequence and extent of the ceremony are determined according to the religious requirements and guidance of the Acharyas.

The main stages may include:

1. Preparation of the Puja Area

Before the ceremony begins, the designated space is cleaned and arranged for the Anushthan.

The required Puja Samagri, Kalash, worship articles and Havan materials are prepared in advance.

A suitable and peaceful environment is maintained so that the Mantra Jaap and other rituals can be performed without unnecessary interruption.

2. Invocation of Lord Ganesha

The ceremony begins with the remembrance and worship of Lord Ganesha.

Prayers are offered for the removal of obstacles and for the successful completion of the religious ceremony.

3. Sankalp for the Anushthan

A formal Sankalp is taken before beginning the principal Puja.

The Sankalp may include the devotee’s name, Gotra, relevant birth details and the purpose of performing Rahu Kaal Puja.

It establishes the intention of the devotee before the Divine and marks the formal beginning of the Anushthan.

4. Kalash Sthapana and Devata Invocation

Kalash Sthapana and the invocation of the required deities are performed according to the applicable Vedic tradition.

After this stage, the Acharyas proceed with the principal worship and Mantra Jaap.

5. Navagraha Worship

Rahu is one of the nine Navagrahas. Depending on the selected Anushthan, prayers and worship may therefore be offered to the Navagrahas.

The Navagrahas are:

  • Surya
  • Chandra
  • Mangal
  • Budh
  • Guru
  • Shukra
  • Shani
  • Rahu
  • Ketu

Through Navagraha worship, devotees traditionally express reverence towards the planetary deities and pray for harmony, balance and auspiciousness.

6. Special Worship of Rahu Dev

The central part of this ceremony is the worship of Rahu Dev.

Rahu Dev is worshipped through prescribed offerings, prayers and traditional rituals. Devotees may pray for peace, protection, clarity of mind, spiritual strength and auspiciousness.

The detailed procedure can vary according to the purpose of the Puja and the guidance of the Acharyas.

7. Rahu Mantra Jaap

Mantra recitation is an important component of Rahu worship.

A commonly recited Rahu Beej Mantra is:

ॐ भ्रां भ्रीं भ्रौं सः राहवे नमः॥

The number of repetitions and the duration of the Jaap may vary depending on the selected Anushthan.

The Mantra Jaap is performed by the Acharyas and Brahmachari Batuks with proper pronunciation, discipline and devotion.

8. Rahu Stotra and Vedic Prayers

Depending on the requirements of the Anushthan, relevant Rahu Stotra, Vedic Mantras and traditional prayers may also be recited.

These recitations are performed as part of the devotional worship and prayer for peace and divine blessings.

9. Havan

For an extended Rahu Kaal Anushthan, Havan may be performed as an important concluding ritual.

A sacred fire is prepared according to the prescribed procedure and offerings are made while the relevant mantras are recited.

The Havan is conducted under the guidance of the Acharyas.

10. Purnahuti

After the prescribed Havan offerings have been completed, Purnahuti is performed.

This marks the completion of the principal fire ritual and is followed by prayers for the devotee and their family.

11. Aarti, Prayer and Prasad

The Puja concludes with Aarti and prayers.

Blessings are sought for peace, stability, wisdom, spiritual strength and the well-being of the devotee and their family.

Prasad is offered after completion of the ceremony.

Who Performs Rahu Kaal Puja?

At Rahu Mandir Paithani, the Puja is performed by the Gurukul’s Acharyas, teachers and Brahmachari Batuks.

The Brahmachari Batuks study Sanskrit, Vedic knowledge, Karmakanda and traditional Hindu practices as part of the Gurukul’s educational system. Learning and practicing traditional Puja procedures and Mantra recitation forms part of this cultural and religious education.

The Anushthan is performed under the guidance of the Acharyas with sincerity, discipline and devotion.

Depending on the nature of the Puja, the Yajman may also participate in the Sankalp or other designated portions of the ceremony.

How Does Rahu Kaal Puja Begin?

Before arranging the Puja, the necessary details of the devotee are collected.

Depending on the Anushthan, these may include:

  • Full Name
  • Gotra
  • Date of Birth
  • Relevant birth details
  • Purpose of the Puja
  • Contact information
  • Preferred Puja date

Once the required preparations have been completed, the religious ceremony begins at the designated location.

The general sequence may be:

Puja Preparation → Ganesh Puja → Sankalp → Kalash Sthapana → Devata Invocation → Navagraha Worship → Rahu Dev Puja → Mantra Jaap → Havan

The exact procedure may be adjusted according to the selected Anushthan and the guidance of the Acharyas.

How Is the Rahu Kaal Puja Completed?

The final part of the ceremony includes the completion of the prescribed Mantra Jaap and Havan.

The concluding sequence may include:

Mantra Jaap → Havan → Purnahuti → Aarti → Prayer → Prasad

After the rituals are completed, prayers are offered for the devotee and family.

The ceremony concludes with prayers for peace, spiritual well-being, wisdom, stability and divine grace.

Choosing the Right Place for Puja

To perform the puja according to Vedic rituals and traditions, enough space is required. Proper arrangements are needed for Ganesh Puja, Kalash Sthapana, the puja altar, and Bhadra. Adequate space is also necessary for the Batuk Brahmacharis and Acharyas who participate in the chanting of mantras and other religious rituals.

The main puja area at Rahu Temple does not have enough space for all these arrangements. Regular puja, darshan, and other religious activities also continue at the temple. Therefore, performing a detailed puja ceremony at the main temple area for several hours is not practical.

Puja at a Place Near the Temple

If the Yajman (devotee) wishes to perform the puja near Rahu Temple, they will need to arrange a suitable place on rent.

The rented place will have enough space for Ganesh Puja, Kalash Sthapana, Bhadra preparation, Sankalp, mantra chanting, and other required Vedic rituals.

The Yajman will be responsible for booking the place near the temple and paying the complete rental cost.

Puja at the Gurukul

Another and more convenient option is to perform the puja at the Gurukul. The Gurukul has sufficient space for detailed puja ceremonies, Sankalp, mantra chanting, religious recitations, and other Vedic rituals.

No separate space rental is charged for performing puja at the Gurukul. There is enough space for Batuk Brahmacharis and Acharyas to sit comfortably, arrange the puja materials, and perform the complete religious ceremony in an organized manner.

The Gurukul provides a peaceful, pure, and spiritual environment, making it suitable for long mantra chanting and detailed Vedic rituals. It offers a comfortable setting for devotees who wish to perform their Rahu Temple Puja in a calm and traditional atmosphere.

Final Abhishek and Religious Ritual After Puja

If the main part of the Puja and Vedic rituals is performed at the Gurukul, the final Abhishek (ritual bathing) will be performed at Rahu Mandir Paithani as the concluding part of the ceremony.

The detailed Puja and mantra chanting will be conducted in the peaceful and spacious environment of the Gurukul. The final stage of the Puja, including the Abhishek and other prescribed religious rituals, will then be completed by the Yajman at Rahu Mandir Paithani.

This arrangement provides a suitable and peaceful space for conducting detailed religious rituals at the Gurukul while ensuring that the final and important religious ceremony is respectfully completed at Rahu Mandir Paithani.

This traditional arrangement allows devotees to participate in the complete Puja process with proper religious procedures and devotion.

Bhandara and Food Donation After Puja

After completing the Puja, devotees who wish to offer Bhandara or food donation (Annadan) can contribute towards arranging meals for the Gurukul’s Batuk Brahmacharis and learned Acharyas.

Devotees can offer their service according to their faith and ability by:

  • Donating food ingredients and essential supplies to the Gurukul.
  • Sponsoring the cost of one meal for the Gurukul.
  • Offering Satvik food for the Batuk Brahmacharis.
  • Contributing grains, groceries, and other essential food items.

In the Sanatan tradition, Annadan and serving food to Brahmins are considered important forms of religious service and devotion. Offering food after a religious ceremony can be a meaningful expression of gratitude, devotion, and selfless service.

Providing food and donations with respect to Brahmins, Vedic scholars, and those engaged in Vedic studies holds a special place in Sanatan tradition. Food donation offered with sincere faith and devotion is regarded as a noble form of religious service.

Join the Service of Annadan

Devotees can participate in this sacred service according to their faith and capacity and contribute to the well-being of the Gurukul community.
